David Price Wins the 2012 AL Cy Young Award

A huge congratulations to David Price on winning the first Cy Young Award and being the first 20 game winner in Tampa Bay Rays history. Price finished the season with a 2.56 ERA, 205 Strikeouts on 211 innings pitched. This Cy Young race was the second closest ever (153 - 149), with Justin Verlander only 4 votes behind.

Rays Wives 2nd Annual Mystery Ball Sale

For the second year in a row, The Rays Wives will be selling Mystery Balls before the September 8th game against the Texas Rangers. For $40, fans can choose a wrapped up Mystery Ball to find out that it is autographed by a current Rays player, former Rays player (Wade Boggs or Fred McGriff), or All Stars from around the league. Last year, I was fortunate enough to get a 2009 Tampa Bay Rays team signed ball. Friends of mine bought balls signed by Jeremy Hellickson & Lance Berkman.

There will also be a silent auction of game-used and one-of-a-kind Rays items outside of Section 106. Both events begin at 5:10 when the gates open. The Mystery Balls will be sold until all are sold out and the Auction will end after the 6th inning. All money raised from these events will go to All Children's Hospital.

Ever go to a Rays game and get stumped as to what song is playing when your favorite player walks up to bat? My Hancock Bank Club Experience

Many of us have always wanted to visit this hidden jem at Tropicana Field, but are stymied by the price point of such an experience. Being able to view a game in this section of the park is an honor and it certainly provides a different feel to the game altogether. What follows is my experience during the Tampa Bay Rays Homestand against the Red Sox on 7/13.

I was lucky enough to win a pair of Hancock Bank Club tickets from MOR TV by coincidentally entering a contest through their site. Most of these contests are featured on our Rays Contest Page and are easy to fill out. The experience begins by entering through the elevators that lead to the Club level. Normally I am always greeted by the ushers at the Trop and made to feel like I am at home, but this area takes it to another level. As you exit the elevator you enter through two glass doors and are greeted by a concierge greeting you in. What you see next is a plethora of leather couches and seats with numerous bars and buffet tables..

The Hancock Bank Club provides all you can eat and drink. The drinks consist of domestic beers on tap like Coors and Bud products, which are served two at a time to each guest. Wine is also included, but any mixed drink is extra. Prices on those start at $11. They also provide you with Pepsi products in the all you can drink. The bar itself is beautiful but suffers from what is my major problem with the club.
The view from the club through the windows is obstructed by the second level of the stands. So when you look outside from the tables, bar or couches you really cannot see the game at all. There are plenty of TV’s in the area piping the game through the speakers with Staats and Anderson’s voices filling the Club, but it would be nice to step away from your seats to order a drink from the bar and see the game live.

The food selection was fantastic. They provide you with many options for all types of appetites. The create a hot dog station was my favorite, as nothing is better than some spicy chili on a Kayem Dog.
What was real special about the food selection was the themed food for the town we are playing. They had some Clam Chowder and Lobster for selection, which my wife really enjoyed. If they do this for each town’s specialty, I would certainly entertain the idea for the likes of Texas or Atlanta’s BBQ. You conclude your meal with an all you can eat ice cream bar, with topping so numerous you can make about 100 different combinations.

So the food and drinks were amazing and well worth it, but the view to this point is lacking. Let’s get to your seats. The seats for the game are directly in front of the club providing a great view of the game. The seats are leather and are spacious enough to stretch out. A waiter will come to each row and ask for your drink orders and bring them right to you. Although I will say this game was a busy one, we got the waiter about every 3 innings, which can be tedious.

Once back in the club, one of the benefits is the guests you may bump into. This game featured two events that day which added to the excitement of the game. First was the band Train was performing after the game. Second, was that the Rays signed their #1 draft pick, Richie Shaffer, that day as well. The Hancock Bank Club is a happening place where these above mentioned talents pass through and hang out during the game. In fact I was able to sneak a stealthy photo of Mr. Shaffer as I did not want to bother his family during this great day.
Overall, I would give this experience a 8 out of 10. I would give it a perfect score if not for the view from the club. I would recommend seeing the game from the seats, but definitely hang in the club for a little while to see and eat your way to an amazing experience.

Sweetbay Rays Play Ball Kid

I was recently given the chance to go along with some friends that had won the opportunity for their son to be the Sweetbay Play Ball Kid before a Tampa Bay Rays game. Those friends found the contest on the Rays Rally Contest Page, so I wanted to share their experience so everyone can see what they will have a chance to win at the beginning of next season.

Sweetbay and the Rays definitely roll out the red carpet for their winners. This is an experience every young Rays fan would be very lucky to have!

Evan Longoria's Red Bull Flight with Kirby Chambliss

Today on ESPN 1040, T-Kras had Evan Longoria on his show to talk about the beginning of the 2012 MLB season. They also discussed Longo's new endorsement with Red Bull, which gave him the recent opportunity to ride in an acrobatic plane ride flown by Kirby Chambliss over the Tampa Bay area. Looks like he had a great day off from Spring Training! Apparently he claims that he did not throw up!

You can check out the video below that features several great shots of this beautiful place we live in!

Tampa Bay Rays 162 Landing Exhibit

For many teams it takes many decades to build a long, rich history. The Tampa Bay Rays got off to a little bit of a slow start after their inauguration, but have been on a tear over the past 5 years. Just as important in building a history is documenting it, and the Rays organization did a great job of recording the excitement of Game 162 with their new 162 Landing exhibit. Below we have documented the exhibit in pictures. If you are interested in checking it out at Tropicana Field, it is located in left field behind the visitors bullpen.

Rays Opening Day 2012 Recap

What an amazing day! The weather was perfect... the block party on Central Ave was a blast... and The Trop was absolutely electric! It is has become fairly customary in years past to have at least 40% of the crowd be Yankees fans when they are in town, but for the first time that I have witnessed I believe it was around half that. It truly felt like a home field advantage. Rays fans were rowdy and defiant of the Evil Empire. Any attempt by Yankees fans to try and rally their team was quickly drowned out. It was really a proud day for Rays fans and the franchise we love. A milestone in my eyes!

Below are some pictures and videos from Opening Day that I collected. Enjoy!

The Pitching Firm of Shields & Price

I am sitting around watching MLB TV's 30 Teams in 30 Days and I can't help but crack up at how loose and fun Joe Maddon keeps his clubhouse. After seeing David Price and James Shields give a tour of the Rays clubhouse in Port Charlotte, I couldn't help but think of this video released last year. Not only are Price and Shields one of the most talented pitching tandems in Major League Baseball, but they are also one of the funniest.

Joe Maddon Ejections

Some games, nothing goes our way. When justice has not been served, Joe Maddon has always been there to back up his players and sometimes provide the spark that his team needs. Although this normally ends in a Joe Maddon ejection, it also turns out to be a comical moment for Rays fans to take some solace in. Here are a few of our favorite Joe Maddon ejections from over the years.

Sean Rodriguez vs Mike Napoli

We will forget the fact that this was the game in which the Rays were eliminated from the 2011 Playoffs, but it was the play that gave the Rays their first run of the game that will have fans talking for years to come. With the Rays down two, Matt Joyce hits a line drive into center. Rodriguez is sent home from first, but a quick throw to the plate gives Sean only one option... to drop a shoulder. The result? A classic home plate collision and a flattened Mike Napoli.

Game 162: The Ultimate Rally

Barring a Tampa Bay Rays World Series victory, the final night of the regular season in 2011 was the greatest MLB moment that we have ever witnessed. It was a night of both jubilation and devastation. For the Red Sox, it was the latter. Jonathan Papelbon gave up the game winning hit in extra innings with two outs and two strikes. Ironically enough, that game winning hit came from a missed catch by former Ray Carl Crawford, opening things up for his former team.

On the other hand, the Rays got off to a 7 run deficit early. All seemed hopeless until the Rays pieced together a 8 run rally in the 8th inning. In the 9th inning, who is up to bad with 2 strikes and 2 outs? None other than Dan "Red Sox Killer" Johnson! Below is his clutch game-tying home run:

In the bottom of the 12th, just minutes after the Red Sox loss, Evan Longoria steps up to bat. With one swing, the Rays completed the biggest comeback (9 games - Sept) in MLB history to make the playoffs.

The whole story of "Game 162".

Legend of Sam Fuld

The 2011 season started out with one disappointment after another for the Rays. Between starting the season 0-6 and losing both Longo & Manny Ramirez early, the season was starting to look pretty hopeless. The Rays did receive the spark they needed to go on one of the most historic runs to the playoffs in MLB history, but it all started in one of the most unlikely places.

With timely hitting and highlight reel catches, Sam Fuld was quite the phenomenon during the 2011 season and a huge part of the teams success. Was his success sustainable at that level? No. Will he ever be a MLB superstar? Probably not, but Sam Fuld's heart, fight and disregard for his own safety was exactly what the team needed at that time and we will forever love him for that.

Haven't filled your #LegendofSamFuld fix yet? A search for "Sam Fuld Defense" on the video page will put many more diving catches at your fingertips.

Matt Garza's No-Hitter

Matt Garza was a part of several big moments in the Rays young history, but his No-Hitter on July 26, 2010 against the Tigers was arguably his biggest. This no-no was the first and (for now) the only in team history.
